It only took two episodes into WWE’s new era for the lines of the brand extension to blur. On RAW 8/1/16, SmackDown Superstar Randy Orton crashed Paul Heyman’s “Randy Orton can’t RKO Brock Lesnar” promo to, well, RKO Brock Lesnar.
While I do understand why some brand extension purists would object to the move being made so early in this new era of WWE, we do have to acknowledge the fact that Orton vs Lesnar was booked before the draft took place. I’d rather they betray some of the barriers than stay in their own corners with no physical interaction on the road to SummerSlam.
It was a great surprise to see Orton, and the fallout of him crossing into enemy territory was executed very well. Not only does this build towards Lesnar and Orton’s match, but it increases the tension between the brands. While SmackDown’s feud over their top title, the Super Intercontinental Championship, has failed to get me interested in their show, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan will respond to Orton’s unsanctioned(?) actions and the ramifications they have on the blue brand.
In the video below, I discuss more of what I thought about WWE’s blurred lines, Sasha losing so early into her Women’s Championship reign, Seth Rollins’ booking, and how Michael Cole pisses me off to the highest level of pisstivity:
